Can you believe it? It’s warming up, at least if you’re anywhere near me. One day it’s in the 60s, then the 70s, then the 80s, then back in the 60s, well you get the picture. The temperatures are pretty much all over the place. But, hey that’s spring for you here in my state of Pennsylvania.
By now you know it’s Mother’s Day, or at least I hope you do and we all have one, a mom that is. Whether our Mom’s are here in the physical world or not, they are in our hearts. It is my hope your love runs deep for your mom because without her, you would not exist.
First, let me say with a written confession right here that I didn’t always treat my mom the best. I resented her for a lot when I was growing up and I won’t get into that. I’m currently writing a self-help book about that. Something that’s therapy for me that my therapist suggested I do since I’m a writer. How ironic, right? Maybe I’ll get to help people when it’s published.
But, here’s the thing I held what happened to me against her so much that I allowed many years to come between us. I wasn’t close to her for all of my 20s. Well, to be honest, I wasn’t close to anyone, really. I didn’t really like anyone. I think I didn’t like me. No, I know I didn’t like myself. So much so that I filed for divorce and moved on with my life at age thirty.
After I got divorced, I was a mess, so I leaned a lot on my mom and step-dad and for that I am very thankful. I went through some tough times. But, you know what a mom’s love never dies. They forgive, they love you, no matter what happens, they are there for you. My mom was no exception.
I’m thankful for my mom and I wouldn’t want any other mom on this earth than her, and I’m not just saying that. She’s still a mom and you know mom’s and how they are. I don’t care what age you are. Trust me, I’m no spring chicken and my mom is still my mom and acts like my mom. I’m her youngest and only girl, so imagine how that plays out. I swear if she could tell my hair stylist how to cut my hair, she would and it’d be short. Excuse me, but no thank you. Oh, and I’d be wearing barrettes too.
Second, I think we celebrate holidays just because someone said oh this is a day you should celebrate because this is Mother’s Day. But why do we celebrate Mother’s Day? Just because we have mom’s? No, silly, that’s not why. I’ll tell you why.
In ancient times, the Greeks and Romans would have festivals for mother goddesses, which were held in the Spring.
Jump forward to modern day and Anna Jarvis who was an American social activist, campaigned to have a Mother’s Day. She did this in honor of her own mother’s death in 1905 and wanted to establish a national holiday.
In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation declaring the second Sunday of every May as Mother’s Day. Since that time, other countries around the world have also declared the same day as Mother’s Day.
The importance of Mother’s Day is to express love and appreciation towards mothers and other mother figures in your life for their unconditional love and support they give to you.
This year I will not only show my mom how much I love her by giving her a gift of appreciation, but one of my aunts too *see foot note. My aunt watched me when I was little. Over the last ten months, she has endured a lot after losing my uncle to cancer. She deserves a gift for Mother’s Day that comes from the heart and with love, and that’s what Mother’s Day is all about.
If you know of anyone, you feel deserves a gift for Mother’s Day: a simple hug, a single rose, even a candy bar could make a difference to that person’s life. They should know you care and think of them as a motherly figure and value their input at the very least.
If you’re a Mother, I want to wish you a:
Happy Mother’s Day
